Arsenal

The sale of the clubs talisman has caused the yearly panic which happens every time their star player decides to move on. Unlike last year, they have not lost there midfield maestros but their main goal threat. The cry by many Gooners is that they do not have a striker capable of scoring the 30 goals which saw them clinch 3rd spot. They would be correct as they have now had two strikers which can share that responsibility.

Podolski was the pre-meditated replacement for RVP. He can be likened to him as they both posses a powerful left foot, who can play alone, with someone or across the channels. Although the German has shone at international level his reputation was dampened when he went to Bayern Munich and was low in the pecking order before Klose and Luca Toni. In his return to his former club of Koln he helped them retain their league status with 18 goals in 29 Bundesliga appeances. At Arsenal he will be the main man, and this type of pressure is where he seems to excel. If he manages to reproduce his international form consistently at club level Arsenal may have found a less creative but just as effective replacement.

Giroud offers them the plan B Option they have been missing since the sale of Emmanuel Adebayor. He can hassle defences with his presence and aerial threat as the French international stands at 6ft 4 adding some much needed brawn to a largely timid arsenal side. Although he has never played in a top league he has an impressive goal scoring record in all his former clubs including 21 goals from 33 appearances in his last season at Montpellier. It is easy to forget the depth of Arsenal attacks who also have the likes of Walcott, Chamberlain and Arshavin. The creative midfield arsenal possess will ensue that service is providing to either or both Podolski and Giroud who have the goal scoring records to be contenders for the golden boot along with their predecessor.

What Arsenal should be concerned about is using the 22.5M to reinvest into strengthening their evidently weak defence. They could clearly do with a quality centre half to compensate for the injury prone Vermaelen. They ideally  need a left back that is more defensively minded to partner sagna in the wide postions. The main negative about the move is that they are selling their best assets to another rival which naturally sends out the wrong message. However, With this being said Arsenal have made a huge return from the £2.75 M they signed him for all while maintaining their integrity as a well run club who are not prepared to dismantle their wage structure for one player. If they use the funds to continute to rebuild their team, they could finally end their trophey drought and reaffirm their postion as one of the worlds top club.

Man United

After last years trophyless season the club needed a marquee signing to state their intent. In RVP they have just that. He has proven his quality over many seasons scoring goals from all areas of the pitch in all varietys. If last season was anything to go by he should make an instant impact provided he dodges injuries. The prospect of a partnership with Rooney could be the most devastating in the world. The question is if the two talents can sing from the same hymn sheet. The brains of both players suggest they will do just that.

A concern for the club is whether Welback will accept being an afterthought after his impressive season last year whilst also putting Chicharito further down the pecking order. The key for Fegerson will be managing the four strikers like he has done in the past in his 99 squad which boast Yorke, Cole, Sheringham and Solskjaer. This will be essential to avoiding disharmony amongst the squad.

Pessimists will look at the signing as a panic buy as it is unheard for United to sign a player approaching his thirties onto such a lucrative contract(so we suspect). In defence I would say United needed someone to take the Burdon of Rooney who now may play a deeper role like he did when Ronaldo was at the club. Although Rooney may not enjoy the role he may bring the best out in other players such as his new strike partner.

The way united play will allow van persie to be effective leading the line or on the wings. Without meaning to cause any disrespect to Arsenal, the reality is that united posses a more talented team meaning Van Persie has the platform to supersede his sensational season of last year. In short, he could give them the spark needed to reignite both the fans and players to show that United are once again looking to push City to the very distance.
